NBO Nairobi layover hiking day tours are many but the Mt Kenya one day hiking trip is the most satisfying in terms of engagement and scenery. Mt Kenya is located some 175km north of Nairobi in central Kenya. The mot is located in MT Kenya national park which has several gates to access the mountain. From Nairobi, the closest gate is on the south west side called the Naro Moru gate. The Naro Moru trail is the one preferred for one day hikes from Nairobi due to its proximity.
The drive from the NBO airport is a lot of fun as you go through large plantations of tea and coffee. The as you drive up the central Kenya highlands the scenery changes to deep green with pockets of forests and lots of small farm lands. The people are up and about moving to school and work in all manners of transportation including cars, bikes, bicycles, donkey carts and on foot.
On arrival at the Naro Moru gate, you will go through the park entrance formalities and payments. The driver will drive you through to the trail head at meteorological station at 3300m above sea level. From the met station, your professional mountain guide will take over and guide you through the most magnificent scenery of large indigenous trees, moss and lichen draped undergrowth. Walk up the narrow hiking paths as you watch the birds and animals.
On your hike, you are likely to see elephants, buffalos, giant forest hogs, waterbucks, bushbucks, tree hyrax, bongo antelope, among others. The aim of the hike is to reach the edge of the alpine forest into the moorland and bog so as to get a closer and clearer view of the peaks Nelion and Batian. The mountain peaks are clear most of the day unless in cloudy weather. The scenery is so captivating and this is made even more fun by the fresh air and the viewing of wildlife on your hike. It is at this point you start to see why it was a great idea to choose a day hike on Mt Kenya instead of sitting all day at the airport or your hotel.
Continue with your hike beyond the tree line to arrive at the alpine savannah or moorland. There are bogs and giant groundsel and lobelia plants here. You will continue with your hike up the moorland until you get to the edge of the Tereki valley. Tereki valley is where the alpine desert made of rocks and crag starts eventually giving way to the rocky peaks. The observation point for the day trip lies on the lip of the Tereki valley. Here you will have your packed lunch as you take pictures of the now magnificently clear peaks with the snow tops. Take a few moments here taking pictures before you start your descent back to meet station. You actual gradient gain is between 200-400m from met station. The ascent climb takes 4-5hrs.
Descending the mountain using the same route takes you 1½hrs and you will arrive at the meteorological station by 1430hrs. Drive back to the Naro Moru gate by 1500hrs and start the drive back to Nairobi.
Your driver will drop you off at the hotel or the airport at 1830hrs in time to freshen up and board your next flight. The Mt Kenya 1 day hike should be taken if you have more than 12hours to spare in Nairobi.
